Required in Appendix ZB of BS 7002 (En 60 950) -- United Kingdom MAINS PLUG WIRING INSTRUCTIONS The mains lead of this equipment is already fitted with a mains plug which is either a non-rewireable (moulded) or a rewireable type. Should the fuse need to be replaced, a BSI or ASTA approved fuse and of the same rating as the one removed from the plug must to BS1362 marked or be used. Always refit the fuse cover after replacing the fuse on the moulded plug. Never use the plug without the fuse cover fitted. In the unlikely event of the socket outlet in your home not being compatible with the plug supplied either cut-off the moulded plug (if this type is fitted) or remove by undoing the screws if a rewireable plug is fitted and fit an appropriate type observing the wiring code below. DANGER: The fuse should be removed from the cut-off plug and the plug destroyed immediately and disposed of in a safe manner. Under no circumstances should the cut-off plug be inserted elsewhere into a 13A socket outlet as a serious electric shock may occur. To fit an appropriate plug to the mains lead, follow the instructions below: IMPORTANT: The wires in this mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code: GREEN-AND-YELLOW: Earth BLUE: Neutral BROWN: Live As the colours of the wires in this mains lead may not correspond with coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows: The wire which is coloured GREEN-AND YELLOW must be connected to the terminal in the plug which is marked with the letter E, or by the safety earth symbol Å@, or coloured green or greenand-yellow. The wire which is coloured BLUE must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter N or coloured black. The wire which is coloured BROWN must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter L or coloured red. If you have any doubt, consult a qualified electrician. WARNING: THIS APPARATUS MUST BE EARTHED. MODEL: AL-2061 DIGITAL MULTIFUNCTIONAL SYSTEM START GUIDE This guide explains how to install the machine, and indicates important points to note for installation and usage. Read and understand this guide to ensure that you install the machine correctly. The Operation Guide for the machine is on the accompanying CD-ROM. The procedure for viewing the guide is explained in "How to use the operation guide". After installation, read the Operation Guide to make full use of all the machine has to offer. 1. CHECKING PACKED COMPONENTS AND ACCESSORIES Open the carton and check if the following components and accessories are included. If anything is missing or damaged, contact your authorized service representative. If the machine does not function properly during setup or use, or if a function cannot be used, see "TROUBLESHOOTING AND MAINTENANCE" (p.137). 2. PREPARING THE MACHINE FOR INSTALLATION 1 Be sure to hold the handles on both sides of the machine to unpack the machine and carry it to the installation location. 2 Remove all pieces of tape shown in the illustration below and then open the RSPF and remove the protective materials. Take out the bag containing the TD cartridge. START GUIDE Power cord CD-ROM Drum cartridge (installed in unit) TD cartridge 3. INSTALLING THE TD (TONER DEVELOPER) CARTRIDGE 1 Open the bypass tray, and then open the side cover. 2 Remove the CAUTION tape from the front cover and remove the two protective pins from the fusing unit by pulling the strings upward one at a time. Do not cut the strings. 3 Press gently on both sides of the front cover to open the cover. 4 Remove the TD cartridge from the bag. Hold the cartridge on both sides and shake it horizontally four or five times. Hold the tab of the protective cover and pull the tab to your side to remove the cover. 4 or 5 times Protective pins CAUTION tape 5 While pushing the lock release button, gently insert the TD cartridge until it locks into place. 6 Close the front cover and then the side cover by pressing the round projections near the side cover open button. 7 Lock release button Ensure that the power switch of the unit is in the OFF position. Insert the attached power cord into the power cord socket at the rear of the unit. 8 Plug the other end of the power cord into the nearest outlet. Only insert the power cord into a properly grounded wall socket. Do not use extension cords or power strips. When closing the covers, be sure to close the front cover securely and then close the side cover. If the covers are closed in the wrong order, the covers may be damaged. 1 4. LOADING PAPER 1 Raise the handle of the paper tray and pull the paper tray out until it stops. 2 Rotate the pressure plate lock in the direction of the arrow to remove it while pressing down the pressure plate of the paper tray. 3 Store the pressure plate lock which has been removed in step 2. To store the pressure plate lock, rotate the lock to fix it on the relevant location. 4 Squeeze the lever of paper guide (A) and slide the guide to match with the width of the paper. Move paper guide (B) to the appropriate slot as marked on the tray. 5 Fan the paper and insert it into the tray. Make sure the edges go under the corner hooks. 6 Gently push the paper tray back into the unit. · Be sure that paper is free of rips, dust, wrinkles, and curled or bent edges. · Make sure all the paper in the stack is the same size and type. · When loading paper, ensure there is no space between the paper and the guide, and check if the guide is not set too narrow causing the paper to bend. Loading paper in these ways will result in document skew or a paper jam. (B) (A) Comments: 5. CONNECTING THE POWER CORD If you use the unit in a country other than the country where the unit was purchased, you will need to make sure that your local power supply is compatible with your model. If you plug the unit into an incompatible power supply, irreparable damage to the unit will result. 1.It is advisable to keep the length of the message under 10 seconds. If it is too long, you may have difficulty receiving faxes sent by automatic dialing. 2. Your callers can even leave a voice message and send a fax message on the same call. Modify your outgoing message to explain that this can be done by pressing their [START] key ( ) after leaving their voice message. · You can connect an extension phone to the machine to make and receive calls like any other extension phone on your line. Even if you pick up the extension phone and hear a fax tone, the machine will automatically cut in and take over the line. Note, however, if you also have a PC modem on the same line, you must turn on the Remote Reception function, and deactivate the Fax Signal Receive function. See "SETTING UP THE MACHINE FOR USE WITH A PC MODEM" (p.33) and "USING THE REMOTE RECEPTION FUNCTION" (p.34). 1 Ensure that the power switch of the unit is in the "OFF" position. OFF The Remote Reception function is initially set to "ON". 2 Turn the power switch on the left side of the unit to the "ON" position. ON 8. ABOUT THE OPERATION GUIDES The operation guides for the machine are as follows: Start Guide (this manual) This manual covers the procedures for setup and the safety relations. Operation Guide for machine (on the AL-2051_AL-2061 User Documentation CD-ROM) Explains the machine and how to use it as a copier. Also explains how to use the machine as a printer and scanner for your computer. Operation Guide for fax (on the AL-2051_AL-2061 User Documentation CD-ROM) This manual explains the procedures for using the machine as a fax machine. This manual only explains the fax functions of the machine. For general information on using the machine, including safety information, installation, paper loading, removal of paper misfeeds, and peripheral equipment, see the operation guide for the machine. About the scan head The scan head lamp remains on constantly when the unit is in the ready condition (when the start ( ) indicator is illuminated). The unit adjusts the scan head lamp periodically to maintain copying quality. At this time, the scan head moves automatically. This is normal and does not indicate unit trouble. 6. CONNECTIONS CONNECTING THE TELEPHONE LINE CORD Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the jack on the machine marked "LINE." Plug the other side into a standard (RJ11C) single-line telephone wall jack. Be sure not to plug this telephone line cord into the "TEL" jack. The "TEL" jack is used to attach an extension telephone or answering machine to the machine. (See "CONNECTING OTHER DEVICES") How to use the operation guide Detailed explanations of the functions that can be used on the machine are provided in the Operation Guide in PDF format. L TE 1 Insert the supplied CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM drive. User Documentation CD-ROM E LIN If your area experiences a high incidence of lightning or power surges, we recommend that you install surge protectors for the power and telephone lines. Surge protectors can be purchased from your retailer or at most telephone specialty stores. 2 Display the contents of the CDROM, and open the Operation Guide file. FINAL PREPARATIONS CONNECTING OTHER DEVICES If desired, an answering machine or external telephone can be connected to the machine through the telephone jack, labeled "TEL," on the rear of the machine. · Connecting an answering machine to the machine allows you to receive both voice and fax messages when you are out. To use this feature, first change the outgoing message of your answering machine, and then set the reception mode of the machine to "A.M." (Answering Machine mode) when you go out. * To view the Operation Guide in PDF format, Adobe® Reader® or Acrobat® Reader® of Adobe Systems Incorporated is required. Adobe® Reader® can be downloaded from the following URL: http://www.adobe.com/ If you are using distinctive ringing with an answering machine, you do not need to follow the procedure described below. (Please note that when distinctive ringing is used, the answering machine must be distinctive ring compatible.)
